Earth Day Challenge!

 3A’s Earth Day Challenge

In honor of Earth Day, students are asked to complete a small challenge each evening. These challenges will create awareness of Earth Day and the small changes we can make that will help the Earth!

Monday, April 23rd -Turning the water off while brushing your teeth. This may seem like a small task, but if you get into the habit it can make a big difference in the amount of water you use!

Tuesday, April 24th –Try not to use electricity for one hour. This will really allow you to see how much we depend on electricity! Play a board game, head outside , do whatever you like while trying to make sure you’re not plugged in!

Wednesday, April 25th – Turn off the lights when leaving a room. This may seem like another small task, but a great habit to get into!

Thursday, April 26th – Reuse something in your house that you may have otherwise thrown out.  Make a craft, reuse a water bottle or get creative!

We will be having class discussions about the challenges the following day!

 Happy Earth Week!

CSI Mother Goose Land

April 14th, 2012

Thank you to everyone who has provided items for our play.

Tomorrow (Friday, April 13th) we will be having a DRESS REHEARSAL at school. This means we would like everyone to bring the items you need for your part in the play. It is on the yellow sticky note that was sent home on Wednesday. If you do not have some things, that is ok. We would like to have a firm idea of what we need, so please bring in everything that you have tomorrow!

Change for Chores!

As you know, the grade three classes have been hard at work raising money for children in need in Kenya.  When we began our fundraising efforts, our focus was to raise money for the purchase of library books for a Kenyan school.  To date, we have raised almost $150 from both our sale of bookmarks and from recycling juice containers in our classrooms.

This past weekend, Lydia MacKay (one of the teachers in 3A – and a former teacher with Farmers Helping Farmers) met with one of the teachers travelling with Farmers Helping Farmers this year.  Apparently, the community in Kenya that Farmers Helping Farmers will be paired with this year, does not have a feeding program set up at their school. Simply put, the feeding program involves the establishment of a garden on the school grounds that will provide the students with one nutritious meal a day – this may be the only meal a child attending the school may get in the run of a day.  While books are important for a school, the health of the children is even more important.  In light of this, we have decided to redirect our fundraising efforts towards purchasing seeds for this very important garden.

We have one week left before our funds travel to Kenya with Farmers Helping Farmers.  This week we would like to invite our grade three students and their families to take part in one last fundraising effort called Chores for Change.  Many of your children have chores they are responsible for around the house…this responsibility goes hand in hand with being a member of a family.  We also, however, want the students to be aware that they are a part of a larger family – a global family- and we want them to become aware that they have a responsibility to this family as well.  We would invite students to choose a specific chore around the house (one above and beyond what they are normally expected to do)and  to collect change for completing this chore daily.  Students will collect this change throughout the week and will donate it to Farmers Helping Farmers so that they can help buy seeds for the school garden.   We will collect all monies raised on Monday, March 5th.

Thanks you so much for all of your assistance and support in this endeavor.  We hope that this has been a positive learning experience for your children; and, we hope that they leave this experience with a feeling that even though they are children, they still have the power to make our world a better place.

Don’t forget to turn in any change for chores TUESDAY, March 6th

Days in the Month’s Mnemonic

Here is the rhyme we learned in class.

Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November;
All the rest have thirty-one -
Except February, alone,
Which has four and twenty-four,
And every fourth year, one day more!

Happy Weekend!

Just a friendly reminder that there will be no school MONDAY FEBRUARY  20th. Token orders will be on Tuesday, therefore there will be no chicken strips on Tuesday.

Have a great weekend!

Here is the website we were using in class to do MadLibs: http://www.funbrain.com/

One more thing….if you took your ART home to work on it this weekend, please bring it back to school on Tuesday!
